The LavryGold DA924 is a high-end stereo DA converter intended primarily for Mixing and Mastering applications; with balanced professional level XLR outputs as well as unbalanced consumer level RCA (IEC) outputs. The output level is adjustable using rear panel trimmers. There are two AES/XLR and one SPDIF RCA (IEC) input that accept stereo digital audio inputs.

Connections
1.) Line outputs
The DA924 has electronically balanced XLR outputs which can be configured for unbalanced operation using internal jumpers . The unbalanced RCA (IEC) outputs output a lower level signal more suitable to consumer level equipment. The rear panel trimmers adjust both XLR and RCA output level with the following range with a peak digital input level of 0dBFS:
- When set for balanced operation, the XLR output can be adjusted from 12dBu to 22dBu.
- When set for un-balanced operation, the XLR output can be adjusted from 6dBu to 16dBu.
- The RCA (IEC) unbalanced output level is adjustable between +8dBu and -2.5dBu.
The XLR output is Pin 2 "+" and Pin 3 "-" for normal signal polarity when the front panel Polarity setting (“INVERT” switch and LED indicator) is “Off.” Thus, for the DA924 with balanced or unbalanced XLR Pin 2 "+" connections, the signal polarity is "normal" or "non-inverted." Changing the front panel Polarity setting to “INVERT” (LED indictor illuminated) will result in inverted signal polarity for balanced and unbalanced Pin 2 "+" connections, as well as RCA (IEC) connections.
2.) Digital input
There are (3) stereo digital audio inputs on the rear panel of the DA924- (2) XLR/AES inputs which can accept either AES/EBU or SPDIF/IEC inputs. SPDIF/IEC sources can be connected using simple wired adapters or adapter cables (no transformer is required or recommended for cable lengths that conform to recommendations for coaxial 75 Ohm consumer digital audio cables). The IEC input can accept SPDIF (IEC 60958 type II) stereo digital audio inputs.
3.) Synchronization
The DA924 always locks to the incoming digital audio signal and provides excellent immunity from jitter in the incoming signal degrading the DA conversion. For input signal with a sample frequency of 44.1 or 48 kHz, the Lavry exclusive CrystalLock™ mode provides the ultimate in jitter immunity from consumer sources such as a CD player. For digital audio inputs with 88.2 or 96kHz SF, an advanced three-stage PLL provides excellent jitter immunity.
Operating tips
- The output level of the DA924 is calibrated at the factory for +24dBu with a peak digital audio input level of 0dBFS. If your studio uses +18dBu = 0dBFS (which is the same as “-14dBFS = 0dBVU = +4dBu); you will need to decrease the output level using the rear panel trimmers. Similarly; consumer audio equipment may require the output level to be decrease from the factory setting to avoid clipping the input of the consumer level equipment when fed from the RCA (IEC) outputs. This is less likely as the RCA/IEC output level is lower than the XLR output by design, and most consumer audio equipment can accept a peak level of +8dBu (~+6dBV).
- The DA924 has a sophisticated self-calibration system that initializes every time the unit is powered. There are two stages of self-calibration; one which normally takes longer than the other. The first stage is initialization of the temperature-controlled “oven” which maintains the temperature of critical circuit elements. Once the “oven” temperature has stabilized, the second stage of calibration begins and ensures accurate conversion, even as components age. If the power is cycled after the DA924 has been in operation, the first stage is normally “skipped” or completes rapidly and only the second stage calibration ensues.
- The DA924 employs a linear power supply and generates a fair amount of heat in normal operation; so do not mount the unit in a manner that does not provide adequate ventilation. Ideally, no other equipment should be mounted one rack space above and below the unit. Factors such as the ambient temperature and range of temperature variation will affect how much space is needed to provide adequate ventilation.
